Comprehensive Guide to Stainless Steel Water Bottle Surface Coating Processes (Powder Coating Chapter)

"A cup holds stories, life carries warmth." Hello everyone, and welcome to "Dong Dong's Cup Talk" I’ve shared many topics related to water bottles, and today, I’d like to continue discussing surface coating processes. To make this complex subject easy to understand, I’ve once again invited Mr. Liao, the head of a professional coating company that has long collaborated with our factory. http://www.zhanyict.com/en/ProductsDetail-VB-10516.htmlDrawing from his extensive hands-on experience and management expertise, he will share insights on the different powder coating techniques for stainless steel water bottles and their key differences. The following content will be presented in Mr. Liao’s own words. Due to the depth of his knowledge, I’ll break it down into separate articles for clarity.

As a coating engineer and corporate manager with 20 years of experience, I previously shared some insights on paint spraying for stainless steel water bottles. http://www.zhanyict.com/en/ProductsDetail-VB-10516.htmlToday, I’d like to continue by discussing powder coating techniques.

In electrostatic powder coating, particle size distribution directly determines the final texture:

- Coarse powder (D50=80-100μm): Ideal for creating an orange-peel texture, but with poor leveling properties.

- Medium-fine powder (D50=40-50μm): http://www.zhanyict.com/en/ProductsDetail-VB-10516.htmlAchieves a ceramic-like finish with excellent adhesion (Grade 1).

- Ultra-fine powder (D50=15-20μm): Delivers a smooth, satin touch but requires a specialized recovery system.

For a Nordic brand’s water bottle project that required passing 50 steel wool abrasion tests, we adopted a dual-layer coating approach:

- Base layer: http://www.zhanyict.com/en/ProductsDetail-VB-10516.htmlEpoxy-based powder for superior adhesion.

- Top layer: Polyester-TGIC system for enhanced wear resistance.

The critical control point was the temperature gradient between the two curing stages—ensuring the top layer was applied before the base layer fully cured.

I feel that my coverage of paint and powder coating has been somewhat limited. My daily workload is heavy, making it difficult to find extended time for writing. Plus, this is my first time articulating my professional experience in this format—there’s so much to say, yet when I start, I find myself jotting down thoughts as they come. http://www.zhanyict.com/en/ProductsDetail-VB-10516.htmlDong Dong reassured me: "Good things take time. Share what you can now, and if readers show interest, you can always expand based on their questions."

So, let’s begin with this installment. If you have specific questions, feel free to leave a comment, and I’ll gladly delve deeper in future updates!
