Graphene Vacuum Bottles & Thermal Radiation Coatings: Legit Tech or Marketing Hype? Pt.3
Every cup holds a story, every life deserves warmth. Hi everyone, welcome to "Dong Dong's Cup Talk". Not long ago, I received a phone inquiry from a customer asking whether we produced insulated tumblers with graphene coatings, and also tumblers featuring thermal radiation functions. https://www.zhanyict.com/en/ProductsDetail-VB-10349.htmlDrawing on my years of industry experience, I promptly replied that we had never manufactured such products. The caller hung up, sounding disappointed.
Afterwards, I double-checked: we had no such items in production, nor had I heard of any peers making them. Determined to get to the bottom of things, I reached out to many industry contacts and reviewed extensive literature. https://www.zhanyict.com/en/ProductsDetail-VB-10349.htmlGradually, I understood what the customer was looking for, and why they raised those questions. I believe this topic merits discussion, so I compiled the content below.
What exactly are graphene coatings and thermal radiation treatments? Can they genuinely improve heat retention, or are they merely marketing gimmicks? Are any brands, domestic or overseas, already applying these technologies in the drinkware market? I will compare and analyze this topic using available case studies. https://www.zhanyict.com/en/ProductsDetail-VB-10349.htmlGiven the volume of information, I will share it in a series of posts.
Does Graphene Improve Insulation Performance of Vacuum Tumblers?
My upfront conclusion: Graphene cannot extend the heat retention time of vacuum insulated tumblers. All marketing claims of "graphene heat locking" on the market misrepresent the concept.
I will elaborate using factory production cases and test data. Major Chinese drinkware manufacturers including Fuguang, Haers and Xile apply graphene composite coatings on the outer shell of some new tumbler models. The graphene content in these coatings is only 0.3%–0.8%.https://www.zhanyict.com/en/ProductsDetail-VB-10349.htmlIts core functions are limited to three aspects: improving scratch and wear resistance of the exterior paint, enhancing corrosion resistance of the shell, and offering mild antibacterial and antifouling properties. This coating does not participate in heat retention within the vacuum layer and has no bearing on insulation performance. Notably, the popular internal ceramic coating process used in today’s market incorporates a small amount of graphene within the ceramic paint.
Citing data from the 2024 container coating test report by the Ningbo Institute of Materials Technology and Engineering, https://www.zhanyict.com/en/ProductsDetail-VB-10349.htmlChinese Academy of Sciences: under test conditions with an initial water temperature of 95°C and ambient temperature of 25°C, the 24-hour temperature difference between vacuum tumblers sprayed with graphene composite coating and standard painted tumblers of identical mold and vacuum process was less than 0.5°C — a negligible difference.
Many may still wonder: if graphene does nothing for heat retention, why add it? The truth is simple once laid bare. Here is a real case: back in 2023, our factory handled OEM production for a well-known brand. https://www.zhanyict.com/en/ProductsDetail-VB-10349.htmlFor the same tumbler model, standard paint cost ¥2.8 while graphene composite paint cost ¥4.5, a mere ¥1.7 price difference. Yet after labeling the product with "graphene insulation", the brand raised its retail price from ¥79 to ¥129, nearly doubling the margin. Now you can clearly see what is going on.
